Oof, got a bit of the ol' colored-bubble overload on this page. (This is actually a pet peeve of mine with some of the other campaign comics I've seen...)

Huh, had the co-GM on speakerphone to play discord... that is actually clever.
Alice 5th May 2018, 8:53 AM edit delete reply
It would be even better if it wasn't over the phone per se, but on Discord voice chat. ^_^

I can't decide whether to slow clap, or declare "bad commentor, no biscuit."

Well played.

Eh, when people talk about Discord on Elder Scrolls Online, I keep mentally going to MLP, so turnabout is fair play...?

I've done that! Had a friend pre-record some one-liners for a recurring villain in my Crimson Throne campaign.

Might as well be him.
He'll be up in about three or four months.
Funny, I didn't know that rubber duckies could clang.
Oh wait, they can.

Ah, one of the lines that launched a thousand ships a single ship a thousand times.

It's a lie, of course. Well, kind of. He probably missed tormenting 'Tia, but he wouldn't enjoy getting on her nerves so much if he were inclined to miss the mare herself.
Rastaba 5th May 2018, 4:00 PM edit delete reply
Rastaba
Well if that person isn't around for you to enjoy tormenting, you might miss them in and of themselves if ONLY for that purpose. Might also just mean he missed her literally with some spell he tried ages ago that let her and her sister turn him into a garden ornament.

Discord <3< Celestia
Needling Haystacks 7th May 2018, 9:56 AM edit delete reply
I am much in favor of said ship, though partly because of what happened MUCH later when Celestia invited him to the Grand Galloping Gala purely so there would be chaos. She has shown herself to be quite the troll in recent seasons. I think the fandom is having a bad influence on the writers. :P

Sometimes Spud you work with what you get. And in distant shots it can be hard to tell as to whom is speaking.

Colored bubbles actually help with this. Can't see who the bubbles are pointing to? Doesn't matter, you know who said what just by looking at the bubble.
FanOfMostEverything 5th May 2018, 9:19 AM edit delete reply
Objectively speaking, this seems like a really cool wrinkle in a campaign. I'm sure people have blurred the line between character and DM before, but it's still fascinating to see. And I can already feel the guest DM's passion. Magnificent stuff.

I've always done the GM's voice as Patrick Stewart. And a Delancie playing Q/Dischord and them interacting like in TNG is nice.

I've heard the GM's voice as Celestia's/Spike's. And SS's colors - I was hearing it as hers playing Discord, until one of the others said "he".

Which means we have the Mane Six players female, the outside help male, and we still don't know (and might never know) the GM's gender. (Heck, for all we know, the GM is a prototype android escaped from some lab, who's trying to integrate into society.)
Zaranthan 7th May 2018, 8:57 AM edit delete reply
NEW HEADCANON! The GM is a genderfluid android who spends his/her week between games in the garage building new parts for themself, such that you can always recognize 80% of them, but you never know which 20% is going to change.

(It IS going to be cooler, though, because the cornerstone of the party might be Twilight, but the cornerstone of the players is RD.)

Oh my, I'm getting the giggles from some great nostalgia.

I have done something good like this before, and it was one of the spookiest/funnest things I was apart of. I was DMing for a group of fresh players who had a blast doing my campaign, and they were outwitting me every step of the way. Although it was great having them take the game so seriously, probably one of the only groups that did, it was a bit frustrating because they only ever took the safest/most secure actions throughout out the course of the story. Even in combat they put zero faith in their dice to do anything.

To get some advice I talked to one of my friends who I also played d&d with from time to time. They recommended I do something to the players so that they feel rushed. I don't do timed bits too well, mostly because I wasn't able to properly conduct them. I had asked my friend to help me with it (they were one of the few people who taught me d&d, so why not). Having a DM itch that needed to be inched, they agreed so long as they were the DM. I agreed, so long as they stayed within the rules of my table (which gets altered every so often anyway), and don't mess with/alter any of the stories.

Suffice to say the look on my player's face was priceless when I got up from my seat for someone they didn't know, and joined them on their side of the table with my own character sheet. Good times.
Chakat Firepaw 6th May 2018, 7:44 PM edit delete reply
One piece of advice I give is that time pressure should be a common thing your players have to consider. Both in the game and around the table.

Around the table it is mostly two things: First, expecting them to have their action decided when it is their turn to act. If they don't know what their character is going to do, then neither does their character and they just delayed their action. Second, the time the players spend discussing plans is the time their characters spend in that discussion, (this ties into the in game time pressure).

In the game, time pressure takes on a number of forms. It could be:
Hard deadlines, (the unholy ceremony is in three days, the dungeon will be flooded in thirty minutes, etc.).
Soft deadlines, (the doom crystal will be charged in ten days, each supporting crystal destroyed extends this by three days).
Enemy recovery, (each day the fortress can replace one guard squad¹).
Enemy reaction, (if given a chance the hobgoblins will seal and/or guard routes the PCs use to sneak in, after 50% losses or three attacks the bandits will abandon their current base).
Things happening, (random encounters, checks for the PCs being notices, alarms spread).

I didn't even have to consciously give the Discord DM John de Lancie's voice, it was simply the only voice those words could be read in. Excellent characterization, Newbiespud.
